The Cherubim
This infernal or sublunar cherubim, an angel traditionally represented in the form of a chubby, winged baby, is here the bearer or begetter of monstrous creatures, some of which were inspired by Matthias Grünewald and his famous Isenheim altarpiece on the theme of Saint Anthony. Representing this messenger of God, here bringing tidings of desolation and catastrophe, this drawing is part of Jean Bedez’s work on the apocalypse theme. According to Genesis 3:24, it is a cherubim that guards the tree of life with a “flaming sword” when God casts out Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. “Already night with its shadowy cone had measured half its path to the highest reach of that vast, sublunar vault, and the cherubim came out from their ivory door at the usual hour, armed for their nocturnal watch in their war apparel.” François René de Chateaubriand, Œuvres complètes, vol. 5, p. 240
